Mapping Isabella Bird: Geolocation & Unbeaten Tracks in Japan (1880)

Original Source: Attr. [Shimooka Renjō?], The Chokugaku-mon Gate of Yusho-in Mauseoleum, Zōjōji Temple, Shiba, Tokyo, 1865. Hand-colored albumen print.

This illustration is based on an original hand-colored albumen print attributed to Shimooka Renjō, 1865. The photograph is an exact match to the illustration in Unbeaten Tracks in Japan due to the two included figures.

The gate, Chokugaku-mon, features a plaque with the word “Yushoin” written by Emperor Nakamikado. Six of the 15 Tokugawa shoguns are buried at Zōjōji. Much of the temple compound was destroyed during the US air raid on Tokyo of March 10, 1945.
